Insight Codes for a Cause, Supporting Tech Solutions for New England Charities

Insight architect celebrates 10 years of helping nonprofits with weekend-long New England GiveCamp, turning tech gurus into ‘camp’ counselors

TEMPE, Ariz., May 6, 2019 – In a 48-hour whirlwind of technological brainstorming this weekend, teammates from Insight Enterprises (NASDAQ:NSIT), the global systems integrator of Insight Intelligent Technology Solutions™ for organizations of all sizes, turned their Watertown, Massachusetts, Digital Innovation office into a veritable campground to aid New England-based charities through technology.

The New England GiveCamp celebrated its 10th anniversary by uniting 35 volunteer technology experts to help 10 Northeastern charities fill skills gaps by tackling projects like creating websites, designing marketing materials, building donor databases and establishing content management systems. The charities included a local orchestra, youth services, wildlife conservation and international healthcare assistance.

Jim O’Neil, an Insight Digital Innovation senior architect, established the regional chapter in 2010 of the broader GiveCamp program, which has included events nationwide and as far away as Germany since 2007. This was the fourth straight year that Insight hosted New England GiveCamp.

“We want to give back to the groups in our community who usually do the giving, and technology is a powerful conduit to help them better connect with the people they’re trying to assist,” said O’Neil. “I became hooked on hosting these events from when I worked at Microsoft, where a fellow coder devised the GiveCamp idea of directing the talents of software developers into good causes. It’s profound to see how a weekend ‘campout’ grows into a community unto itself, melding philanthropy and technology while creating friendships that continue well beyond the weekend.”

On Friday evening, volunteer software designers, web developers, database administrators and marketers teamed up with members from the nonprofit groups seeking help for common operational problems. Since nonprofits typically lack the technical talent, strategies or tools to optimize how they perform, the tech experts pulled all-nighters through Sunday working with them on web, data management and branding solutions.

Beth Wolfset, a senior data architect at Insight, worked with O’Neil to organize the New England GiveCamp event.

“When you’ve spent a weekend working with a charitable group to solve a problem that’s holding them back, it brings deeper meaning to how technology can improve lives. We put people at the heart of everything we do on a daily basis by designing and developing compelling user experiences. With our business clients, we’re improving their standing in the market or how workers optimize their resources. But GiveCamp brings home the power of innovation on a very personal level,” Wolfset said.

The event was especially personal for one regular GiveCamp volunteer, who gave the final “presentation” of the weekend: a proposal to his girlfriend, who was volunteering for the first time.

GiveCamp was created by a Microsoft developer evangelist in Dallas and has evolved to events in more than 20 cities. The giving focus aligns to Insight’s Reach program, which encourages teammates to share their love of technology by supporting programs that enable local communities to thrive and grow through its limitless capabilities.
